Jesus Returns to Orange Circle

Baby Jesus was dramatically stolen from the nativity scene in the Orange Circle-Plaza a week before Christmas. The Orange Police and my friend, Carolyn Cavecche, the mayor of Orange, graciously put out an announcement that the thieves/pranksters could return the baby Jesus with no questions asked as long as they returned it.

On Christmas Day, the thieves quietly returned baby Jesus to the Orange Circle along with several other baby Jesus figures!

Jesus is back in Orange! Click here to read the newspaper article.

The amazing truth is, whether the nativity scene is present or absent, Jesus is alive and working in the city of Orange, transforming people's lives with the good news that Jesus has paid the price once and for all for our sins!

Dustin Kensrue and This is War

Orange County's own Dustin Kensrue of the Band Thrice, talks about Christmas, Jesus and the Spiritual War that took place when a quiet manager in Bethlehem became the birthplace of a King and a Savior. I love this.

Wedding Anniversary

On this day in 1972, Susan Carol Acorn and Larry Calvin Doan exchanged wedding vows and became husband and wife.

37 years later, they are still thriving in marriage, honoring the Lord and living for Him.
I am so thankful for their example to Marie and I, our siblings and countless other couples who look up to them.

Happy Anniversary Mom and Dad!

Biola Graduate for United States President!

John Thune, a distinguished Senator from South Dakota, is being mentioned as a potential 2012 Republican Presidential candidate. Check out this article.
Thune graduated from Biola University in 1983.
His brother is a Pastor out in the Palm Springs area.
I would be so pumped to have a fellow Biola graduate in the White House!

I Heard The Bells On Christmas Day

This is the song that will conclude our Christmas program at Calvary Church on Sunday night.
This traditional Christmas Hymn has it roots in the poem, "Christmas Bells" written by Henry Wadsworth Longfellow

Longfellow wrote "Christmas Bells" on Christmas Day 1863 in the midst of the American Civil War and the news of his son Charles Appleton Longfellow having suffered wounds as a soldier in the Battle of New Hope Church, VA during the Mine Run Campaign. Longfellow had suffered the great loss of his wife two years prior to an accident with fire. (wikipedia)

Longfellow's personal tragedies make the words of the hymn all the more powerful.
In 2008, Mark Hall and Casting Crowns arranged this traditional hymn in such an amazing way. It has been my theme song this week as I think about the Savior Jesus, bringing "peace on earth" between sinful man and a Holy God.

My Atheist Friend Hosts A Debate

My Atheist friend, Bruce, hosted a very interesting debate last night at the Costa Mesa Community Center in Costa Mesa, Ca.

The topic was "Does the God of the Bible Exist?" and the panel of participants included
Dr. Hugh Ross, a brillant Christian thinker and astronomist, Dr. Clay Jones, Apologetics professor at Biola University and Dan Grossenbach, a graduate of Biola's MA program in Apologetics.

The Atheist side of the panel included an ex-Christian, a undergrad student from UC Irvine and a medical Doctor from Riverside.

The education and experience seemed stacked on the side of the Christians, yet I have to say the Atheist panel generally did a good job of debating their points.

About 500 people were in attendance making this debate really interesting and full of excitement.

3 Observations from the Debate
#1 - The Atheist panel had absolutely no idea how to answer Dr. Ross's argument from Design and what now is being called, "Fine Tuning." They Atheist panel conceded on this point in order to get to what they called more "important points." It was cool to see a guy as smart and talented as Hugh Ross, carry himself with such humility and clarity in his presentation. There was literally nothing the opposing panel could debate with his presentation!

#2 - The Atheist panel's main argument attacked the Christian position of God's goodness. They called it God's omnibenevolence. They questioned how a God who is good could allow evil things to happen or send people to a permanant Hell. This is the typical "Problem of Evil" question. I felt the Atheist panel did a good job of presenting this point, even connecting specific Bible scriptures to this argument. The Christian panel was solid in their response to this question, but I felt the Christian panel dropped the ball on answering this question with clarity. They seemed to bounce around alot and got a little off-topic.
For a great response to the problem of evil wrapped around God's goodness, check out William Lane Craig's response.

#3 - The majority of the crowd was from Atheist clubs in the area. I was really disturbed and saddened to hear some people in the audience mock the name of Jesus with such arrogance. This broke my heart. I am so amazed when I read the account of Jesus on the cross and read the part where Jesus is being mocked by the eye witnesses at the cross and He responds with such an incredible answer:

"Father, forgive them, for they no not what they do."
I want Jesus' response of compassion to be my response as I engage with an increasingly bitter and angry secular culture. My friendship with Bruce has been really cool. It was funny to be invited by an Atheist to a debate on Christianity! He did a good job of organizing the debate and and I am proud to call him my friend. I pray God will use me in Bruce's life to show him the authentic Jesus.

The Bible Passage I Will Share Tonight

I love the New Testament book of 1 Peter.
Here is the passage I will share from this great book of the Bible, tonight at our Young Adult Christmas Gathering:

"18For you know that it was not with perishable things such as silver or gold that you were redeemed from the empty way of life handed down to you from your forefathers, 19but with the precious blood of Christ, a lamb without blemish or defect. 20He was chosen before the creation of the world, but was revealed in these last times for your sake. 21Through him you believe in God, who raised him from the dead and glorified him, and so your faith and hope are in God. "

Groom Updates Facebook Status During Wedding Ceremony

This is the latest You Tube/Wedding sensation.
I think it is pretty funny, but now that it has been done,
I don't think I would allow a couple I was marrying to do this...

Drug Dealers and the Love of a Father

As a Pastor, my life is filled with so many random and interesting moments.
One day a few weeks ago, I spoke at a Senior Living Retirement home in the morning, to daycare elementary kids in the afternoon and cool hip 20 somethings in the evening.

On another day I collected donated baby diapers in the morning and delivered donated packages of women's underwear to the OC Rescue Mission in the afternoon.

I regulary have coffee with business professionals, college students, engaged couples, divorced Dad's and everything in-between. I love being a Pastor in Orange County!

By far one of the most interesting highlights of my Pastoral life came last week...
As I helped a college student move out of a real bad situation he had gotten himself into. The student's landlord is a drug dealer, and the small time criminal came over to observe, as the student and I moved his belongings out of the house. Before long, the drug dealer and I struck up a conversation talking about life, kids, tires, typical guy stuff.

The Dealer Opens Up
As the conversation continued, I found myself moving nothing and instead listening to this known drug dealer share his heart about how he had never once heard his Father tell him he loved him. It was a powerful moment as this hardened man, revealed the pain of his life. It helped me realize again, just how powerful it is to listen well to someone and give them dignity/value no matter their past (or present).

I didn't get a chance to share the Good News of Jesus with this guy, but I pray that he saw Christ in me as we talked and as I empathized with him.

My Prayer
Lord, your grace even extends to drug dealers!
Thank you that you don't treat me or others how we deserve.
Out of your great mercy Lord, you have died for the ungodly
and ransomed them from sin through your death and resurrection on the cross.
Thank you for demonstrating such love.
May your created beings including me and the drug dealer, somehow be able to grasp the overwhelming love you have for us.

Watch Out Dr. Laura, Rush and Jim Rome

Today I made my talk radio debut on 95.9 KFSH, a Christian Radio station here in Southern California. The station is hosting a Christmas Concert at Calvary tonight featuring Tim Timmons (Mariners Church), Matthew West and 10th Avenue North.Fish Radio personality "Big Wave Dave" gave me 30 seconds to talk about Calvary Church. I don't know if was the intimidation of sitting next to a radio celebrity or knowing 30,000 soccer Mom's were listening to my every word, but I froze on the radio!

Fortunately, I got through the 30 second spot relatively unscathed.
But I forgot to mention our church website for people to check out,
So to humor me, will you go check out our website? Thank you.

Next up: Guest host Jim Rome.
